Juneau Community Cleanup
In 1916, Mayor B.D. Stewart announced that “…a cleanup campaign should be inaugurated and that the papers and citizens in general should cooperate in the matter of urging the cleaning up of the entire city.”
So, as you can see, even thought Litter Free was formed in 1985, our community has been at it now for over 100 years!
Get ready!
The 2023 Litter Free Juneau Community Cleanup will be on Saturday, April 22 – Earth Day!
2023 Cleanup Details:
Thursday, April 20 – Bags will be available for early distribution at the Friends of the Library Amazing Bookstore and at Cycle Alaska.
Saturday, April 22, from 8 am – 10 am – All bag sites will open
Litter Free provides:
- Bags (yellow= trash; green = recycle aluminum, plastic, tin, NO GLASS!!!)
- Plastic gloves
- Sign-up sheets
- And information on the cleanup.
Bag sites:
At the bag sites we direct people to clean up anywhere they find trash on PUBLIC property – roads, sidewalks, ditches, streams, beaches, parks, trails, wetlands, etc. We are not authorized to enter private property to do cleanups. Additionally, this event is supported through a generous donation from Capital Recycling and Disposal to accept trash, so it is not a time for people to unload their personal trash.
Bag distribution sites:
- Douglas Library/Fire Hall
- IGA Foodland Parking Lot
- Senate Building – Downtown Business Association
- Western Auto Marine
- Fred Meyer
- IGA Super Bear
- Duck Creek Market
- Forbidden Peak Brewery
- Sunny Point – Branta Street
What to do with full bags:
Litter Free coordinates the many volunteer truck drivers that pick up the bags and haul them to the landfill. To help the drivers, those picking up trash must tie off full bags of trash and recyclables, and place them on a MAIN roadway in a location that will be easy for the trucks to pull over safely for pick up. Bags should be out for pickup by 2pm so that the trucks can pick them up and take them to the landfill before it closes. If you see stray bags after April 22nd, contact us at litterfreeinc@gmail.com to coordinate a pickup.
